You Can’t Leave Now
What drives people to do certain things? They may want revenge, or are being pressured by there friends, no matter the situation people do stupid,regretful things. In The Destructors, they destroy Old Misery’s house for their gangs reputation and peer pressure.
Blackie’s gang destroys the house for several reasons. One reason is that they want there gang to be known. They are a small gang that has never done anything but “pinch” stuff and take illegal rides on the train. If they do something big they will be known across the city. On page 44 it says: “Driven by the pure, simple, and altruistic ambition of fame for the gang.” They want to be big like an adult gang and get somewhere, but if they spend their time do nothing that will not happen.
Another reason they destroy the house is they are under peer pressure. T. (Trevor) comes up with an amazing plan to become known. They are all part of the gang and cannot just quit because of one act of vandalism. If one person bails out other people are going to bail out. And nobody wants to be the first one to chicken out.
